Under a Killing Moon is among the earliest attempts to develop the subgenre of interactive movie in adventure gaming. Can Tex finally get his dream date with Chelsee after this heroism? You, as Tex, must uncover this evil crime by helping CAPRCION to disable the Moon Child computer and prevent the total annihilation of mankind (and save the girl, of course). Hired to trace down a stolen bracelet, Tex soon fumbles his way into a more hideous scheme to commit genocide against the Mutants. Yet, living among the Mutants is Tex Murphy-a hardboiled, bourbon drinking, down on his luck Norm working as a private dick in this wrecked town. Norms, who have developed natural immunity to the radiation, have cast their hatred upon these Mutants. In old San Francisco, Mutants are populated among the ruins of a deserted city. After World War III, cities have crumbled under the massive showers of radiation. Together with a tight story and great puzzles, adventure gamers are ready to save the world in Tex style! By using a brand new graphic engine developed in-house specifically for this title, the post apocalyptic San Francisco can now be fully realized on screen. With the incorporation of live action sequences, Tex has finally come alive in the form of Chris Jones who is also the producer and designer of the game. Making a return appearance from Martian Memorandum as a hardboiled private investigator, Tex is ready to fumble his way again to solve a conspiracy involving a secretive organization with an agenda to destroy the world. A little more time spent on designing a creative story and finding qualified personnel to portray the game's many characters would have gone a long way. With the release of Under a Killing Moon, Access Software has upped the ante in the genre of adventure gaming. Access has created a clever story-telling engine it's the ingredients that need work. Nevertheless, the overall experience is entertaining and full of surprises. And the storyline, while complex and deep, unravels awkwardly. Dialogue is more interruptible than interactive since you select questions and listen to responses one at a time. Most of the acting was done by Access employeesand it shows. Both are uniformly stilted.Īccess hired some "name" actors to lend UAKM some Hollywood cachet, but they have only minor roles and offer less than stellar performances. Problems arise in the acting and dialogue. The game's install process sets a standard for ease-of-use that is thankfully becoming more common. Experienced adventurers will find that the gaming elements are moderately challenging and if you do run into a brick wall, UAKM has an easy and effective built-in hint system. You'll accomplish this by exploring (high and low), gathering clues and items, solving typical adventure puzzles, and conducting interminable interviews. Tex's gaming world is huge, ranging from his cluttered office and nearby dark alleys to a glittering mansion and a gargantuan space station. You wander at will through his sharply detailed 3-D environment, examining objects, opening drawers, and talking to characters. You play Tex Murphy, the bumbling, disheveled detective from two previous Access adventures, Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum. Under a Killing Moon (UAKM) is an excellently wrapped package with some less than compelling contents.
